Stalingrad winter map too bright
« on: September 16, 2024, 12:03:59 AM »

Hello everybody.

How can I change the brightness level on the Stalingrad winter map? :(

My Moscow winter map is fine/normal.

Thanks for reading.

You can open appropriate textures, say, in Gimp, and decrease their brightness. The names and locations of textures you can find in load.ini file.

For the RRR version of the Stalingrad map we have three load.ini files; one each for summer (sload.ini), autumn (aload.ini) and winter (load.ini).

For the first two the standard LandLight.mat file is used, as for the vast bulk of maps. But for the winter map the following file is used, as defined in load.ini's [LIGHT} section:

[LIGHT]
  LandLight = East/stalingrad_winter/WS_LandLight.mat

This file's contents as I have had them for a few years are:

[ClassInfo]
  ClassName TMaterial
[LightParams]
//  Ambient 1.2
//  Diffuse 2.1

//  Ambient 1.0
//  Diffuse 1.8

  Ambient 1.0
  Diffuse 1.4

--------------------------

I found the original Ambient and Diffuse values of 1.2 and 2.1 to be excessive, and so tried 1.0/1.8, finally settling on 1.0/1.4.

You could make up a tiny mod structured like this:

Stgrad_Winter_darker/MAPMODS/MAPS/_Tex/East/Stalingrad_winter/WS_LandLight.mat

Inside this .mat file, which is plain text, copy/paste this text:

[ClassInfo]
  ClassName TMaterial
[LightParams]

  Ambient 1.0
  Diffuse 1.4

after many unsuccessful attempts, I'll leave it to the modders.
Thanks.

Strange path. If you put this folder tree inside, say #WAW3 it should not work.

Stgrad_Winter_darker/MAPMODS/MAPS/_Tex/East/Stalingrad_winter/WS_LandLight.mat

It is one folder too long. Shouldn't the tree start with MAPMODS, as this is the first level?

#WAW3/MAPMODS/MAPS/_Tex/East/Stalingrad_winter/WS_LandLight.mat

Edit: just as I type. CaptainChaos proves my suspicion:)

Edit2: and I have to go way lower on Diffuse to see any real difference. I get a good results at

  Ambient 1.0
  Diffuse 0.8

I think I might keep that.

Vamps,
I structured the path I wrote as a complete standalone mod to drop in #WAW3. (And I should have specified #WAW3, in case anyone didn't know that mods reside there.)

But yeah, given that anyone using B.A.T. will have a MAPMODS folder already, your suggestion is better.

When using a wiinter map, pay attention to the month. And be sure the DECLIN value is representative. When the Sun gets on the high side at midday in Mar/April it will render the snowy textures as pretty bright.

Note also that there remains a one month error! If I remember correctly, the disposition of the Sun is one month later than as set in a mission. For example, if the mission date is Mar 15, The Sun is where it would be on Apr 15.

I've pointed this out years ago, and have fixed my own game. No one seems to be interested in the least, and so I have not foisted this upon the community.

WxTech didn't you fix the Sun declination problem with your Sun and Moon mod?
