The Hannibal class is one of the largest aeroplanes in the world. It is fitted with four engines, the total horse-power of which is over two thousand.  A steward is carried, and there is a buffet from which light meals are served during the flight.

A few years ago I was chatting with a 90 plus year old pilot who used to fly Handley Page airliners from Croydon Airport. His favourite was Heracles if memory serves me right. He told me of two events that could be recreated.

1. They had an engine failure off the coast of North Africa. The pilots looked for a suitable stretch of sand to land on, being wary of quicksand or soft sand of course. When they were down the passengers disembarked as the steward laid a table surrounded by parasols and chairs and served champagne and caviar while the crew tinkered with the engine. In the days of Empire there was a refuelling station every few hundred miles. He also mentioned that the hammocks that served as passenger seats caused much airsickness.

2. When returning from Europe they often had to fly up and down the English Channel waiting for the clouds to disburse. If they were short on time or fuel they would fly up the valley from the coast to Croydon even in thick cloud and rain. I saw the original logbook at Croydon Airport that had much praise for the British and Dutch professional pilots in the 1930s but not so much for the less precise other airline pilots. Sadly, that first International Airport was swept away and turned into a restaurant! Even the Tiger Moth that was hanging from the ceiling for over 60 years was sold.

Thanks a lot! This is the most beautiful era of aviation… and a perfect idea for all war-tired long-time users of Il2. What about Swissair, we have Lockheed model 9 Orion,  even if only one-legged… (maybe someone will find a solution…).

what do you mean, one legged?

The tail is not really skinnable on that franken, so I have not yet made a swiss skin. But may some half-historical can work.

I don'know... there is Orion cockpit mentioned in the log, but this is OK...
I reinstalled 4.3. just in case, the same result...

I'm rereading Imperial 109, by Richard Doyle. Published in 1978, I first read it a couple of times it in the early-mid 1980s in paperback. Now I'm reading it for the third time on Kindle. The story of an Empire-class flying boat service from South Africa to North America by way of Kenya, Sudan, Egypt, on to the UK, and across the North Atlantic, plus the many events and adventures of the crew, passengers, and others. Set in 1939 in the run-up to war, with much intrigue and derring do. It wouldn't be possible to recreate the entire trip in TGA, of course, since we don't have map coverage of every stage, or the Empire-class flying boat, and the North Atlantic would be a bit of a stretch, but perhaps one of the other flying boats with a suitable skin (the Sunderland, for example?) could act as a stand-in. It's one of the stories that sparked my aviation imagination when I was much, much younger!
