Is it possible to reduce bomb damage
« on: November 26, 2024, 10:28:18 AM »

I'm curious if anyone know a way to reduce the damage that bombs do in IL-2 1946. Doesn't matter whether they are multiples as from a large level bomber, or singles from a dive bomber.

Of course one can. I've done so for some 1,000kg bombs in my own game, as well as for napalm.

It comes down to altering one or both of the power and radius property values in the weapon's class.

It's worth noting that Bomb.class, the mother class for bombs, alters the destructive power under certain conditions. Such as when exploding against ships, or when hitting the ground with sufficient velocity so as to dig into the dirt (that's what the "dig-in" folders for bombs in the effects are for.)

It might help to understand what you want to do or what your "Problem" is?

Usually people ask for more bang, not less. There is some story behind this.

That would require some instruction for me as I have no knowledge or experience working with those types of files, and don't even know where to find them.

I was hesitant to mention the specific modded version I'm wishing to modify, because that mod isn't supported here.

I play BAT, VPMod, and YPack. BAT and VPMod are fine, but I find the bombs in YPack do much more damage than in the other two mods. So, when building missions that are compatible with all 3 versions, YPack presents a problem in missions where the mission objective is to defend ground targets from opposing bomber attack.

I was hoping there was a simple solution, like adding or modifying a line in the the conf.ini.

What you could try is to verify if the class files for the 1000Kg bomb from VP Pack (or BAT) can work in Ypack. You can extract the relevant class files from the pack of your choice and place them in a folder (that you can name whatever you like) in Ypack mod folder. In case they don't work like expected or cause any problem you can simply delete this folder and everything will be like before. No harm done.

What folders will I find the "class files" in? Do I need specific software to view/edit them?

You need to be able to do java class modding.

If you do not know what that means, you are on square 1 of a longer journey. You need tools and understanding of code.
All of which is available for free on this site and can be learned. But you can't do it "just like that".

Seeing what your "problem" is, I think the solution you're really looking for (easy to handle by an inexperienced person and "fix" this in bulk order) does not exist and is not possible. This is calling for detailed editing of dozens and dozens of java files.

Thank you for that. I was afraid that might be the answer.
At this point in my life I'm not really inclined to learn how to "code".

Way back in the early 2000's, when I was still in my 50's, I took 4 semesters of "Computer Information Systems", and "Networking" at a local community college. Since I've stayed involved in computers all this time, I have just enough education and experience to be dangerous.  But not enough to jump into Java stuff.  ;^)

yeah, I guessed as much when I asked my question.

So, just stay with BAT, if you like how bombs go boom there :)
