AC-47 Spooky - AI shooting
« on: December 15, 2024, 10:17:00 AM »

AC-47 Spooky is one of my favourite birds in Ultrapack today.

I wanted to have more fun by adding AI Spookies on the map but so far I failed to convince them to shoot ground targets. If a ground target is assigned by the GAttack command, what AI does is a display of aerobatic tricks including immelmanns and killer loops over the target. Impressive for AC-47 but not very effective for the mission.

According to the old thread, this plane "was too special for AI"(quoting Storebror).

Did anything change in Ultrapack with AC-47, are there any tricks on how to "teach" AI Spooky to shoot?

You can make a turret aim at ground targets. But there is no routine for an AI pilot to take this into accounts. They will always act like they have fixed forward guns.

For the same reason a fighter plane with only turrets (WW1 style) will never attack an opponent. No fixed forward gun available.

There's code in some helicopters to allow AI turrets to shoot at ground targets, particularly the Huey gunships. You could combine that with a series of regular waypoints around a target that would allow you to set up AC-47 'pylon turns' with invisible turrets firing on ground targets. The only problem is that the fire would come from odd angles, not from the side-firing miniguns themselves...

Thanks, everyone for the comments.

So for now we can leave AI Spooky as it is - flying and spooking the enemy with the sound of her engines, without the shooting.  :)

At least AI can drop flares at night. I noticed some issues in the multiplayer with that... Will be investigated soon (2 weeks).

Regarding flares of AI AC-47.
It was my false alarm. No problems so far.
Except that AI drops those flares before the night landing... But it looks cool. Why not lighten the night?  8)
