Which Format Should I Download
« on: December 21, 2024, 08:11:23 AM »

Regarding the below potential 3d models to download, which one would be the best format to download?

If you want to proceed with 3DS Max in order to eventually get something useful out of these models, I'd stick to the original fbx format, which 3DS Max usually handles pretty well.

Thanks Mike. If you are looking at 3D models online, that could potentially be used, is there a format to look out for. Is there a format that uses the same '.msh' / '.hier' format as IL2.

Anything that preserves most of the 3DS Max object attributes.

No. Not at all. Absolutely, definitely no.

What is the best way to tell if the attributes are preserved?

.fbx, .obj and .3ds are the most popular as well as .max format.
To my knowledge Blender cannot import .max files.

Blender opens GLTF and GLB files/ FBX can be imported in 3ds but take care that there is a need for dimensional correction (I posted the fix in this forum quite a time ago).
I understand that you are attempting to downlaod models from Sketchfab - The site indeed offers quite a number of CC license models that can be freely imported to Il2 (above all ships and vehoicles that are still lacking here). But be warned - most of the models there are very "heavy" in polygons - so the first step after import would be to reduce the polygons number, then began remodding the plane.
Enjoy.

For those who are curious about 3D modeling and don't have much experience, there is a free utility that allows you to import/export some of the most common formats.
This is ModelConverterX, a tool designed for Flight Simulator users. Here is its address:

Un saludo.

Is it just the 'Model Converter X', or do I need any of the other downloads from this page.
