If nothing else, both games lacked four engine heavy bombers (either flyable or AI) from the get-go, the difference being that CFS3 eventually incorporated them in later add-ons, whereas IL-2GB still has yet to feature them at all.

I can't think of comparing these two flight simulators.  They are leagues apart.

CFS 3.0 was released in 2002, largely (we think) as a response to IL-2, because it was so far superior to anything at the time, particularly CFS 2.  Jane's WW2 fighters were the only other sim at the time that had a super dedicated following and many ended up going the IL-2 route, but the sequel to Jane's WW2 fighters was really disappointing.  (Let me add that I do recall that Microprose's "1942: The Pacific Air War" and "European Air War"; although not as popular I did enjoy their "B-17 Flying Fortress", for what it was worth; I was actually a fan of the old Sierra Online "Aces Over the Pacific" despite the flat world, and the sequel "Aces Over Europe" )

IL-2 Great Battles, although not my cup of tea because of complexity and me being lazy to learn it's details, is something I enjoy ever so often, and it is leagues ahead of CFS 3 in technology, visuals, and realism.

If the comparison is only on the incorporation of Strategic bombers, well, it kind of makes sense.  CFS 3, as I mentioned was almost a rushed answer to IL-2... an ETO answer to lower flying air combat with a heavier emphasis on ground attack and cooperation...

I mean, I am holding the box of both in my hands but look what it says:
* Front:  Tactical Air Combat from the Leaders in Flight Sims!"
* Back:  "200 feet above the countryside.  350mph."

... a lot like IL-2.

But, I just continue to enjoy IL-2 with BAT, that is what brings me happiness with all the mod content.  I bought shockwave's Aircraft Powerpack expansion for CFS 3 but that was somthing that lasted maybe a week and I went back to IL-2.
