Eclipse fails to launch.
« on: February 12, 2025, 07:01:50 AM »

Hello guys, there was an java update added to my PC the other day and I thought nothing of it, however, I tried to fire up eclipse today and this:

I can only assume the java update did something although I do not know for sure but it is the only thing updated recently so it could be that but equally something else. To make matters worse it seems Windows 11 does not actually make a restore point by default anymore as I am sure it did with others so it seems we now need to set it ourselves so it looks like I have been fucked over good time.

Have any of you experienced a similar issue with your java programs?

Not sure if I can do anything about this now so I post this as a warning to you guys to hopefully avoid the same fate befalling you all.

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Looks like you're trying to run 64 Bit Eclipse on 32 Bit Java.
Could you post the full content of your eclipse.ini file please? It's in the same folder location like eclipse.exe.

Hello Mike, since I posted I have managed to get eclipse working again by using a older file still on my external drive saved since I migrated all the stuff from my old machine so drama over for the moment. ;)

Not sure if this is the file you asked for but it could now have changed from earlier I guess but I might as well post this anyway as my install of eclipse could be a little suspect from carrying it over to a new machine, it was a case of by hook or crook back then. :-[

Code: [Select]
-startup
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.3.0.v20140415-2008.jar
--launcher.library
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_64_1.1.200.v20150204-1316
-product
org.eclipse.epp.package.java.product
--launcher.defaultAction
openFile
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256M
-showsplash
org.eclipse.platform
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256m
--launcher.defaultAction
openFile
--launcher.appendVmargs
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6
-Xms40m
-Xmx512m

I guess it was fortunate I still had old files still available as before the migration I had checked the java site and was going to try the full install again but it all seemed so much more confusing from when I originally followed the set the up using your tutorial, I was proposing to clean up that external drive but I guess it might be safer left as is because some files might not be available anymore as when at the java site I could not seem to find the older versions used for what we do for IL-2, did the world move on without us, were we abandoned by the new kids on the block?

Anyway, sorry if I bothered anyone, I never had eclipse fail like that at least not without me having messed with it first that is. :o

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

That's the file I've been asking for, but indeed it's not in the state of the error anymore.
Well then... now that you got it sorted, no need to touch it anymore.

Okay Mike, thanks for that, really appreciated. 8)

What an odd situation though, I never experienced that with eclipse before, hopefully it will not happen again. ;)

On a side note, whenever I have installed a new Eclipse version successfully, with all plugins, extensions etc. I need, and all settings applied, I simply create a backup of it by zipping the whole Eclipse folder.
That way, I can distribute it to all computers I use for developing.
Works a treat.
