No Illusions - A Belgian May 1940 Fighter Campaign
« on: March 23, 2025, 01:50:19 PM »

Well, I am doing a bit of spring cleaning on my HD and my rig (while they are still around in this brutal world of ours). And I found a campaign I built WAY back, in the old glory days of DBW, but never posted, due to an obvious (but solvable) problem. The campaign is called:

You are a Fighter pilot with the Belgian Airforce, in the the II:ème Group de Chasse (Fighter Group), commanded by Major Jacques Lamarche, and flying the Italian Fiat CR.42, as we all know a very nimble but undergunned biplane. Although in 1940 probably the best biplane fighter in the world. (And mind you: in one mission you will fly the Hurricane Mk I early, which was used by the Belgian airforce in 1940.)

You can download it here: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=2113

Belgium adopted an almost suicidal policy of neutrality on the outbreak of World War II, despite the bitter lessons of the Great War. A policy of appeasement prompted by fear meant that all attempts by the British and French to co-ordinate defences prior to the German invasion of May 1940, were ignored. Not until the Panzers had crossed her borders did Brussels appeal for Allied assistance. Nonetheless, efforts had been made by the Belgians to shore up their air defences and, surprisingly enough, it was to Hitler’s Axis partner, Italy, that the Aéronautique Militaire (Belgian Air Force) turned in September 1939. Equally surprisingly, the Italians agreed, although they made certain that the Belgian Government, desperate for early deliveries, paid a high price for each machine.

On 10 May 1940 twenty-four of the imported CR.42s had joined their units, with the 3ème Escadrille (Red Cocotte) being at full strength, and the 4ème Escadrille (White Cocotte) having received just nine machines. The pilots of these two dozen fighters had only just begun to familiarize themselves with their new mounts when they had action thrust upon them.

How To install Campaign: There are two alternatives here.

Alternative one: The whole directory is installed as it is under \Missions\Campaign\FR\. IMPORTANT: NOT BE, BUT FR! As it is now there is no Belgian awards, medals etc (this is the problem!), so France must be used. But as (most) Belgians are French speaker, I trust that this will be no big problem when it comes to immersion etc.

Alternative two: You put the “BE” folder in the download (containing awards, ranks etc) in the Missions/Campaign folder – replacing the now empty “BE” folder. Then you put the whole directory named ”1940_Belgium_CR42_WAW” inside the “BE” folder. (The updated version of the “BE” folder has been made by Jirpilot.)

Thanks for looking!  ]salut[

BE rank/medals folder here: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=1741

Malware bytes will simply not allow me to download that file, even after adding exclusion.  Oh well.  I'll use France then.

I realize that Poltava was meaning that the campaign/BE folder from the M4T link I posted doesn't in fact have proper Belgian medals (uses Dutch ones, I think)

I've set up some resources to try to throw together a full BE folder using the Ranks and Icon from the M4T campaign and the medal pack I'm putting together, delivery time two weeks

This is getting confusing. I thought that the medals in the M4T  pack were correct,  but they didn't appear on the briefing screen. I have a fix to that. I will post it unless the medals are incorrect.

So does anyone know if the medal graphics are correct or not?

the award.properties lists the Dutch awards. I have a set of 8 (roughly WWII accurate) Belgian medals set up to go, if that'd assist you

My BE awards/campaign folder is now done!

The original link is now defunct. For the new link (with WWI and modern versions of the awards as well), go here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=73836.msg802229;topicseen#msg802229

(For anyone using this folder for Poltava's campaign, you will need to select the rank of "Kapitein" to have the intended experience)

Great! Thanks a bunch! Would it be alright if Larschance and I also use these ranks and awards for a future Belgian campaign we are developing?
