Even armored helicopters like the Mil-24 can be (relatively) easily brought down by ground fire from heavy machine guns.

It sounds incredible, but titanium box around the pilot could stop a 37mm round from a distance and a 20mm at point blank range....armored glass could stop a 12.7mm bullet...only thing that can shoot it down are stingers and similar weapons.

that is an awesome piece of equipment!
i don't know if i am a natural or it simply is that easy, but for me, it flies great!
SAS really needs a "heli" section, mi-24 and 'huey slick' are top of my wish list...

note: can it be that there is a little bug or other kind of mistake in the KIAS-gage?
i was doing like 140km/h, seen in the CTRL+F1 view, but this instrument only read "4" whatever unit.

and i guess the altimeter is in feet, right?

anyway, great plane, no, heli!

no troops, 50 fuel, 47% power will hover. So just drop the helicopter till it gets relatively close to the ground. Then powerup until it is nearly not going down anymore and wack it back down to 50% power which will slow down your decent a very small tad. Adjust between 45 and 50 to get it down. With paratroops and 50 fuel it's around 70-75% power.

Try your method, it works! I even  manage to land backward!!! ;D

Thanks

An aircraft's indicated airspeed in knots is typically abbreviated KIAS for "Knots-Indicated Air Speed" (vs. KCAS for calibrated airspeed and KTAS for true airspeed).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indicated_Airspeed

The CTRL+F1 gauge shows groundspeed, in Km/h - if you were high enough, you could be doing 140 Km/h over the ground with 40 Knots indicated, but with no wind, you'd have to be at 10,000 m or so. From what I can tell, the gauge seems to under read a little - maybe by 5 knots max.

The fuel most of helicopters use is rarely exploding, unless you for example got hit by missile or something directly at fuel tank.

Most of modern helicopters use Jetfuel (like JetA, JetA1, JP-1, JP-4, etc). The Jetfuel is basicaly kerosene. This fuel have a low ignition point and Autoignition temperature. But the Sikorsky S-55 has a radial engine wich use normal Avgas or other gasolines with more octanes. So if you hit in the tanks you may explode like other piston engine aircraft in il2.

i was at approx 500m, making 140 Km/h over the ground, alright, but it read 4 kias, i swear.
that's a little more than 5 knots under read.

Cool, no more disappearing helis :)

Btw, I've added version 1.02 to the thread subject title so people who don't go reading through everything can keep track of the version ;)

^^ It's a little modification that I made to Flakiten's Mod. I've been in talks with him over the little septuplets and later these will be released as a separate add-on mod for his helicopter once the 3D models are fixed up and there will be new releases for each version of this helicopter mod to make sure the things are compatible together. At the moment the models are "blocky" due to smoothing issues so once that is fixed then you can expect a release. I intend to add other stuff to it as well and build it on as I figure out some code...

Flakiten originally wanted to include people into the default mod however with the people inside it the amount of polys of the whole model is doubled and so may not be very good for some people's machines, so he has decided to leave it out.

Well done Flakiten and everyone else involved. This is a fantastic addition to our sim. I believe it is one of the most innovative mods yet created. And loads of fun to boot!  :)
