Looks like this plane has no LOD's  ::) Same as He51.Models are also quite simple and not that much of IL2 standard.I would consider them as WIPs and play with them a bit longer.Good start but needs some finishing  ;)

As I have already stated before, LODs are in my mind totally un-needed with current PCs where you can see the planes gradually from  far away exactly as natural human vision - subject of discussion may be whether LOD500 is enough or LOD1000 is better, but we need to understand that Il2 was developed quite a number ago, where LODs were a technical necessity. Same for the number of polys requirement - we try and keep them between 5000 and 10000 in order to have a smooth game, even on "older PCs" - but even these "older PCs" are quite more performant than the PCs at the time of the writing of the "Il2 bible" were a 3000 polys model was "demanded".  As a matter of fact on a standard current PC, even a 20000 polys model will right quite smooth A number of rules "established" in the "IL2 bible" address only the initial requirements of Maddox's team (and some BTW were never implemented even by ubi1c) belong to the past. Il2 has changed as the PCs have changed.

I would argue that LoDs are still useful, because they allow for missions containing a huge number of aircraft and objects.

If everyone started using LoD0 models for all aircraft, vehicles, ships and objects at all ranges then even the most powerful of gaming PCs would run into problems.

From a practical point of view, if the LoDs are well done then you will not see the change ingame.

LOD1 is 50% of the number of polys of LOD0. And we keep using ridiculously low polys models (my own models are around 5000 polys only). Even if every object in the game used LOD0 only the difference would be only an overload of x2 of the number of polys, and current PCs can easily deal with more than such an overload.
BTW it is not so much the number of polygons as the number of "objects" (individual meshes) involved - as well as the size of these individual objects - that has most influence on the overall performance. Each object has a limit size which is Il2 is rather low (around 300k - curiously, an empiric verification shows that, depending of the complexity of the mesh, this does not seem to be  a "fixed" limit but a "range" - between 280K to 340K) .

Most of the stock aircraft have 4 LODs, and going on the way they tend to be around 4000 polys max for a single engined aircraft's LOD0 model, that is only 500 polys for the LOD3.

Also because of the way Il2 is coded, bigger textures have a much bigger impact on performance that more polys, and not using LODs means you are using 1024x1024(4mb) textures at all ranges instead of 128x128(64kb) textures at long ranges.

To be honest, I do not think that you not using LoDs on these aircraft is an issue. They are SCW aircraft, which means no massive air battles, so you don't need so many aircraft in a single mission. However, if someone for example redid the B17 model and didn't use LoDs, then there would be problems.

David is right speaking about LODs and textures. And also there should be some general rules to be followed when adding plane to game.Sorry, but for me both planes are WIPs without LODs and thus no-go with my install.
I hope you will work on both machines in future, they are worth it  ;)
