Thanks to all involved for this!

This isn't a criticism, but did this aircraft really have foreward swept wings? That's what it looks like to me in this model (although not at all angles) but I've never heard about that before. It would be interesting, if true.

Second, based on the limited amount I've read, I think that what is being called Ki-44-II-Ko really represents the early war Ki-44-Ia, for a few reasons:

1) Armament of 2x7.7 and 2x12.7mm guns. AFAIK, the II series had 4x12.7mm at least.
2) Top speed of only 570 km/h. Dead on for series I but ~30km/h slow for IIs. Has anyone been able to go faster in level flight?
3) Telescopic gunsight. Pictures of later aircraft seem to have this removed, like the Ki-43.

I am impressed, really, and I have an joy that reminds me the first day I tried IL-2. The work done by all involved is impressive, and the plane is impressive itself. Many thanks.
I was impressed by it, it's not something between Ki-43 and Ki-84 in performance, but much closer to Ki-84. Not only dives, climbs and accelerates hard, it's balanced and a joy to fly. Easy to land too. The only problem is the excessive torque at full throttle. In fact, it's so good that possibly an advanced Ki-44 with a Homare Engine would have been a better bet for the japanese war effort, coming to units faster and in more quantity than Ki-84.

I am not bothered about the telescopic sight, I am sure that sooner or later japancat will work on it. I want to make only one question about the engine settings. I found too difficult to go to max speed. There must be something wrong that I am doing here.

Just some notes from research on the Ki-44 and Ki-84. Quote from From Wikipedia, Ki-84 - Though it lacked sufficient high-altitude performance, it performed well at medium and low levels. Seeing action against the USAAF 14th Air Force, it quickly gained a reputation as a fighter to be reckoned with. Fighter-bomber models also entered service. The Ki-84, Ki-100, and N1K2-J were the three Japanese fighters best suited to combat the newer Allied fighters.
I LOVE the Ki-44 Shoki but the Ki-84 was better in overall performance and handling. From Wikipedia Ki-44: Replacement with Ki-84 Hayates for the final battles of the war.  That's not saying it isn't a potent fighter, Quote: Initial dislike of the fighter owing to its poor view for take-off and high landing speeds gradually gave place to popularity when the value of its high climb rate and diving speed were appreciated. However, violent snap rolls, high-speed inverted flight, and other manoeuvres were dangerous, and non-combat losses were high. (War Planes of the Second World War FIGHTERS Volume Three - William Green)[/b] :o

Some notes on 40mm gun:
*A note: A word on the 40 mm Ho-301 cannon: the Ho-301 cannon was a very light weapon for its caliber but, having a very low muzzle velocity, was effective only at close range. (The ammunition, was 10 rounds per gun) As the effective range of the Ho-301 did not exceed 150 yards, some Ki-44-IIcs were fitted with a pair of 37mm Ho-203 cannon with an effective range of 1,000 yards. However, both types of heavy cannon were only moderately successful and saw limited operation. (from Rene J Francillon book -Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War.) :o

It was a while before it was realized that the 40mm cannon were a major disappointment. The muzzle velocity was so low the effective range was a suicidal 150 yards. (from Richard M Bueschel book - Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki.) :(

The Ki-44 is a good looking fighter in my book. 8) A joy. I REALLY LIKE IT! :)

Hi mates!

About the telescopic gunsight it is standard on the I and on the II onwards it should be replaced with a reflector one but due shortages of the latter the great part of the production retained the former.

About the weapon the pre-production machines had the 2x7,7+2x12,7.

Beginning line production the official designation was KI-44-I and was ordered on 40 copies but after the few first the armament was stronged to 4x12,7 changing the designation on KI-44-I-ko.

The KI-44-I-otsu had the oil cooler was moved from inside the engine to outside it , beneath.

The KI-44-I-hei had the lower undercarriage cover portion moved from the legs to the fuselage.

Version II came with the new Ha-109 engine.

The prototypes and pre-production planes that , strangely , reverse again on 2x7,7+2x12,7 , begin field evalutation with the designation of KI-44-II.

The first production series , strangely , was anyway designated KI-44-II-ko even if was the same as the prototypes and pre-production planes.

The second production series became the KI-44-II-otsu because had the gun 'improved' at the same standard of the previous KI-44-I-ko (4x12,7).

The gun armed versions take all the same designation KI-44-II-hei and can have different configuration:

4x20 (less common due such gun shortages)
2x12,7 (fuselage) + 2x37 (wings) (most efficace configuration)
2x12,7 (f) + 2x40 (w) (less efficace configuration due have short ranges (150mt or 500 ft) and low rounds (only 10 each gun)

The last KI-44-II-hei with single exaust pipes don't change their designation.

The last version came with the new Ha-145 engine and with larger wings area and tail.

On this one the difference between the two sub-variants was only due their armament:

KI-44-III-ko - 4x20
KI-44-III-otsu - 2x20 (f) + 2x37 (w)

Hope this can be useful!

cheers

FOR ALL Who have Mess with Ki-44 Installation - "How to" install and correctly 'Make'
the other versions of Ki-44 Mod by JapanCat to work.

I wanted only make the whole thing easier and give you direct instructions how to...dont have crash of IL2-1946 on 60 % or other % CTD...or such ;P

For that reason JUST Follow this 'Tuned' Install Guide: [corrected 20-09-2010]
by advice of walter_solito and in second step
checked by more sources- Verified internet pages, which i use for finding correct historical data.

So historical and development order is -Ko, -Otsu, -Hei for any of Japan planes.

Do Following:
1. Run & Unpack the Ki-44.exe into your MODS folder

2. Write  these entries into air.ini, plane_ru.properties, weapons_ru.properties (located in Your MODS/STD... folder):

In that order, Add these lines to your air.ini:

Ki-44-II-Ko       air.KI_44_IIKO 2                      NOINFO  ja01  SUMMER

Add to your weapons_ru.properties:

######################################################################
# Ki-44-II-Ko
######################################################################
Ki-44-II-Ko.default                      Default
Ki-44-II-Ko.2x60                         2 x 60kg Bombs
Ki-44-II-Ko.2xdt130                     2 x Droptank(130 L.)
Ki-44-II-Ko.2xdt130+60                2xDroptank(130L)+2x60kg Bombs
Ki-44-II-Ko.none                         Empty

Add to plane_ru.properties:

Ki-44-II-Ko          Ki-44-II Ko 'Shoki', '42

3. To install other three variants of Ki-44, do this in following order:
Unpack the 'Ki-44 Hidden_Cutouts_Beta' archive by clicking the right button of ur mouse and hitting "Extract Here", and what you will get should be a folder with name "Ki-44 Hidden_Cutouts_Beta"

4. So well, now go into it (previously extracted folder)  and with ur mousecursor mark ALL of the classfiles here (4) and Copy them (by clicking CTRL+C or right mouse button by hitting the "Copy" option).
Then go to ur MODS folder, find there your Ki-44  folder, go in it and Paste it there (by clicking CTRL+V or with mouse by hitting the "Paste" option) the four classfiles, if asked - overwrite that one classfile, which have to be overwritten.

5.  The last thing.... To make the other variants of Ki-44 to work.

Add into air.ini:

Ki-44-II-Otsu           air.KI_44_IIOTSU 2                     NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late      air.KI_44_IIOTSU_LATE 2        NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Hei            air.KI_44_IIHEI 2                     NOINFO  ja01  DESERT

Add into plane_ru.properties:
my  Hint---->

Ki-44-II-Ko          Ki-44-II Ko 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu        Ki-44-II Otsu 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late   Ki-44-II Otsu-Late 'Shoki', '43
Ki-44-II-Hei         Ki-44-II Hei 'Shoki', '43

Save the changes in air.ini and plane_ru.props'.... I've tested this and it is working smoothly with latest UP2.01 and latest SAS 7.1 Buttons. It have to work same good for SAS Modact users.
(P.S.- Always use the latest Buttons from SAS, just for case to don't have the game to make a crash)

Now You are almost Done. Im Sure... I will tweak it more and soon will add here entries for 'weapons_ru.properties' too, after i finish testing it, then will I update this post.

So at the END it should look like that in ur air.ini and plane_ru.properties files--->

RECAPITULATION / SUMMARY, after all changes which were done before

In Your air.ini:

Ki-44-II-Ko       air.KI_44_IIKO 2                       NOINFO  ja01  SUMMER
Ki-44-II-Otsu     air.KI_44_IIOTSU 2                  NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late    air.KI_44_IIOTSU_LATE 2       NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Hei      air.KI_44_IIHEI 2                      NOINFO  ja01  DESERT

and like that in plane_ru.properties:

Ki-44-II-Ko          Ki-44-II Ko 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu        Ki-44-II Otsu 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late   Ki-44-II Otsu-Late 'Shoki', '43
Ki-44-II-Hei         Ki-44-II Hei 'Shoki', '43

For Skin Folders... Go into your 'Paintschemes' folder and create there folders with these names:

Ki-44-II-Ko ,
Ki-44-II-Hei ,
Ki-44-II-Otsu ,
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late

and its all... just put your favourite skins of Ki-44 in each (some) of them.

If U have done those things above, now is ALL OK. xD

I hope i helped some guys who couldnt figure out how it have to be installed correctly. Enjoy and use this.
If you want, tell 'misFit' info about this correction. ;D

DOOOh...Mate "Walter_Solito" do you speak japanese?! I don't. I gave such order coz Ki-61 Ko, Hei, Otsu are in same order in original air.ini from the game and same in air.ini from MODS/STD/....folders.

It wasnt my goal, but i've thought that Hei is an earlier version than Otsu - i really dont understand japanese shortwords. So if your reccomendation is GOOD, its OK.
Everyone will and have to correct it as you wrote, but with this Guide I just meant to Make Ki-44 MOD and subvariants to work correctly- that was the Main GOAL of the Thing ;P

Anyway im Thankful for your correction Walter, isnt the goal why is modding 'alive' to make the IL2 game more (or less) accurate and realistic ? xD

@von_Kasbegi415

Sorry but 'hei' is after 'otsu' so you should correct the entry like this:

Ki-44-II-Ko               air.KI_44_IIKO 2                       NOINFO  ja01  SUMMER
Ki-44-II-Otsu            air.KI_44_IIOTSU 2                   NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late    air.KI_44_IIOTSU_LATE 2          NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Hei               air.KI_44_IIHEI 2                      NOINFO  ja01  DESERT

and like that in plane_ru.properties:

Ki-44-II-Ko             Ki-44-II Ko 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu           Ki-44-II Otsu 'Shoki', '42
Ki-44-II-Otsu_Late   Ki-44-II Otsu-Late 'Shoki', '43
Ki-44-II-Hei              Ki-44-II Hei 'Shoki', '43

cheers

About the gunsight being normal or telescopic, i have a suggestion (maybe another mod): is it possible to make it random? Since few planes received modern gunsights, there should be an small chance of getting one of those instead of the telecopic tube...

Having lots of fun flying this little plane  :)
Is there a way to change the engine sound to Nakajima engine sound?
It had a Nakajima engine and the UP2 Nakajima engine sound is awesome. I just love the J2M5 engine sound on flyby... 8)
It's using the BMW800 series engine sound according the the SAS buttons refference.
Hoping I can just edit a file or something?

For nothing.... WillyM. Look again on it- i've done some corrections(updates) in it.
It made me very happy that someone appreciate my work. ;D Btw today I'm having my Birthday (20-th of Sep) LoL

' Habe Geburtstag!

I have one recommendation for some good modder. I have done research from one of my 'handy' books about Japan early and late WW2 Era planes, and found there photos and pics of Ki-44-II (this version have only both) with and without telescopic sights.

So my recommendation is to correct these things in that Ki-44 Mod:

Ki-44-II-Ko and -II Otsu surely 'Had' in real those ugly Telescopic sights.

The later models like Hei and Otsu-Late could be equipped (Fitted) with both- the early production series of Ki-44-II Hei and Otsu-Late could be fitted with those telescopic sights...

But greater part of production (Late series) of Ki-44-II Otsu-Late and Hei were surely equipped with modern sights, because Japanese have licensed and produced+used in their advanced fighters German sights like Revi 12/C and later  Revi 16 too.The japanese produced versions of the german originals were slightly changed and adapted for service in japanese planes, so they look a 'bit' different like the German originals.

Im looking  forward that someone will do Ki-44-III plane Mod, it was an upgraded version from late '43 and early '44,
this version have to be equipped with more powerful engine (2020 HP), longer wing and modified tail section. It have to use 2x20mm cannons in place of those 12.7mm MG's which were on Ki-44-II (on top of the engine), in wings it would use 2x30 mm japanese-made cannons or other version could be equipped with japanese 2x37mm cannons, other variant was planned with 4x20mm cannons.

It was only in 'twelwe' hour done version, because situation over japanese sky was getting worser for Japan, it should repell and intercept B-29, Ki-44-III would be more armored as Ki-44-II and its top speed was improved too- coz stronger engine, it would have slightly better climb rate, and could operate in higher heights- larger wings+for higher heights optimised engine, and have to carry more fuel too- longer flying time.

I will post this in Mod Request section ;D so this is from my small research.

As some people knows..., between Germany and Japan existed U-Boat (Submarine Cargo lines xD) transportation of important technologies and drawings, like the whole machines/apparats (Kannons, guns, weapons, engines....etc),
and i tell it was more one sided coz Germans didnt need something from Japan,
so Germany transported to Japan much tons of steel and paper xD
Most of them Japanese didnt accepted for production in Japan, coz they have thought they will be OK using only their own developed technologies and weapons...
but as the war goes worser for them, they was really greedy for german developed 'beasty' powerful weapons and engines, like Walther HWK liq. rocket engines , like planned production of Ki201 (copy of Me262) with R4M rockets for it and so on...;P

Underline:
Im very big fan of J7W1 thing, which was completely developed by Japanese alone, but it should use german licensed Revi 16 sight or other japanese Revi clones.

Btw Words could be Cheap, but sometimes the words aren't plain... if they are really needed.

I think that most after 1943 had modern (for their day) gunsights. I also got the impression by reading that there was a lot of difference between Ho-301 (40mm) and Ho-203 (37mm). Ho-203 did B-24 Palemberg raids very costly, with many casualties.

Well I asked this earlier but nobody responded and it seems no one else has this problem. When I switch to look down sight mode, Shift + F1, I can't see down the telescopic sight, it just zooms in on the end of the tube. Since no one else seems to have this issue, I'm assuming that there is some control setting that fixes this but I've tried to find such a setting and either missed it or don't under stand. I haven't really flown planes with a telescopic sight except the Fokker XX, which works fine with shift+F1, so I am at a loss. Can someone possibly point me to a fix?
Go to your control panel and look for (Tinted Reticle Dimmer) standard setting should be Ctrl+D  by pressing both at the same time it should open up your telescopic sight. If you've been opening them with shift+F1 then they are not true telescopic sights.

I can only get about 570km/h true airspeed at about 5000m with supercharger in second stage, 100% prop pitch, 100% fuel mixture, 110%throttle, trimed for level flight. Am I doing something wrong ? Is this model the:
Ki44-I powered by a 930 kW (1,250 hp) Nakajima Ha-41 engine, with a maximum speed of 580 km/h
or
Ki44-II 1,074 kW (1,440 hp) Nakajima Ha-109 engine with a top speed of 604 km/h ?

Is there any flight model performance differences between the Ki44-Ko, Ki44-Otsu, Ki44-Otsu-Late, Ki44-Hei?
