Russian Liberation Army Squadrons
==========================

By Caldrail

Extra fictional squadron mod for OFFLINE IL2:1946 only

Russian volunteers who served with the Wehrmacht wore the Russian Liberation Army patch. The ROA (Russkaya Osvoboditel'naya Armiya) was organised by General Vlasov, himself a volunteer against Stalin's regime, who lobbied long and hard to give his men a more active part in the war. Hitler disliked the idea, and preferred to have them perform secondary duties. By mid 1943 several hundred thousand ROA troops were serving in Hiwis (Helper units) or Ostenheiten (Eastern volunteer units), utilised mostly against partisans, from early 1942.

In mid 1943 the worsening situation sparked mutinies. By autumn ROA units had been withdrawn or transferred to  France, Finland, Italy, and Belgium, and with absenteeism rocketing, harsh measures to alleviate the problem were imposed. Only in April 1945, at the insistence of Himmler, did the ROA fight in frontline service on the Oder River. Most units surrendered to the allies, and some even switched sides in the later months of the war.

This 'nation' was included in the original Forgotten_Countries mod as a 'what-if' choice, because no ROA personnel flew warplanes. Not all installations of IL2 will therefore have them. For those that don't, or those who want a more 'realistic' option, this mod allows the ROA as an extra German squadron.

As an extra, and for historical completeness, the Russians are also given an ROA squadron with an identical patch to simulate units that switched sides.

Interestingly enough, but I've actually read accounts from Bulgarian veterans about ROA pilots flying on the Eastern Front. Given that after September 1944 they were fighting alongside RKKA units (Soviet Red Army), and before that along German pilots, I seriously doubt they would not be familiar what the ROA was. I'll have to check again when I have more free time, though.

Interesting addition, at any rate!

Let me know if you find anything positive. Hitlers antipathy toward Russians, even the ones on his side, was hardly condicuve to have them entrusted with Luftwaffe aeroplanes!

Heck, is that for real? Brilliant. I'll update the mod as soon as I get the time. Not sure about the PLA though.

Incidentially, if anyone has the unit emblems for those listed above please pass on a PM to me. I'll make sure the correct insignia are used.

There were one or two ROA 109 Gustav skins available in the past, on IL2skins if I'm not mistaken. I may still have them somewhere, but not sure- I lost a lot of stuff in an external HDD crash unfortunately.

I still have both, one is a 109G-10 skin by Barkhorn; the other a K-4 skin, "marked www.euro-squadron.co.uk", "EURO WARRIOR" and "www.skyheroes.com" but no author's name.
Further details-
G-10 skin: 16655-MajSTBychovROAEasternFrontEarly1945-109G-10. Screenshot and blank skin included.
K-4 skin: 4190-STByckov--Jagdstaffel5

Both skins seem to be of the same aircraft, Red 1. The ROA shield replaces the crosses on wings and fuselage as well as the swastika on the fin. Judging by the numbers they were indeed uploaded to il2skins.com. If anybody wants them let me know and I'll put them on my gamefront page.

Unfortunately, no. But I will put the two 109 ROA skins on my gamefront page later, subject to Barkhorn's approval.
