Tutorial - How to harmonize textures.
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:24:02 AM »

Some mapmakers were wondering how to harmonize textures in an easy way instead of fiddling around with Saturation, Colour Balance, Contrast etc.
Well, I came across an easy method of how to do this by coincidence and ironically I'm not a mapmaker at all.
I use an editing program called Photo Impact but according some member it works the same way with programs like Paint Shop Pro.
When necessary I translated some words to English.
So here is my:

TUTORIAL HARMONIZING TEXTURES

Let’s say I want to make a map with the Olive Tree texture and the Avalagrass texture and it’s necessary to harmonize them so they have the same RGB values.
On the screenshot below you see both textures and on the right the final result.

But how do you do this????

Well, basically it’s very simple. First you need to have 8-bits indexed 256 colours .tga’s otherwise it won’t work.
First select the tga you want to edit in your photo editing program. Then in the toolbar go to AANPASSEN (=ADJUST) --> KLEURENTABEL (=COLOR MAP).

As you can see below a KLEURENTABEL (=COLOR MAP) window pops up with the 256 colours of this texture which will be replaced by the Avalagrass colours.
Click LADEN (=LOAD)… and again a window pops up. Click on AVALAGRASS and next OPEN.

And what do we get?
Tada! The Olive Tree textures with the Avalagrass 256 colours. The only thing you have to do now is saving the new texture.

Maybe the .tga needs some final manual adjustments but this method saved you a lot or work.

Cheers and happy retexturing, Uufflakke.

Hi Uffalakke I can never spell your name right.

I'll bump this up so people can see it again regarding your work on the Mancheria map.

With this and learning three d object making i'll have a lot to do over the two montrh holiday  ;D :D at the end of this month.

Definitely an interesting blending technique well worth the effort to learn.

Cheers Kirby

Is there a way to do this using GIMP? Seems like a great time saver.

I found something related to it in the GIMP manual but haven't tried it out. Because I try to avoid GIMP as much as possible. For whatever reason I never get used to it.

Quote: You can, however, create an ordinary palette from the colors in an indexed image—actually from the colors in any image. To do this, choose Import Palette from the right-click popup menu in the Palettes dialog: this pops up a dialog that gives you several options, including the option to import the palette from an image. (You can also import any of GIMP's gradients as a palette.) This possibility becomes important if you want to create a set of indexed images that all use the same set of colors.

Thanks for the tip. I was able to figure out how to import a palette from another image.

Now I need to find out how to use the newly imported palette to alter the chosen image.

I believe I know now why you tend to avoid gimp! lol!

Edit:    I got it to convert the image using the new palette but for some reason it won't save all 256 colors.

          Any suggestions?

No, I noticed the same thing yesterday when I did some attempts in converting textures in GIMP.
Really don't know why I don't get the new images in 256 colours.

I think for gimp, if each tex used is already saved in 256 8-bit, then surely using the colour option 'posterise' each layer to 126colours, then once each layer options are to your liking, merge or flatten, posterise to 256 and then index to 256. Or maybe not...

I finally was able to complete a conversion with all 256 colors.

Here is what I did, step by step.

First, open the texture you want to use as your master palette.

When open, go to Windows,Dockable Dialogs,Palettes.

Then left click on the small left pointing arrow  to the right of the word Palettes.

This opens a box. Slide the cursor to Palettes menu.

This opens another box. Slide the cursor to Import Palette.

This opens a small window called Import a New Palette and left click.

Go to Select Source and select Image. Rename it if you want.

Left click on Import near the bottom right corner.

Now go back to the small Palettes window and the palette from the texture
you opened will be there. Use the slider to find it.

Now open the texture that you want to adjust.

Go to Image and left click. A box will drop down.

Slide to Mode and another box will open.

Select RGB. The box will close.

Go to Image followed by Mode again but this time select  Indexed.

This will open a small window called Indexed Color Conversion.

Select Use custom palette, uncheck Remove unused colors from colormap
then left click on the little palette picture.

Use the slider to find the palette that you put in there earlier.

Left click on Convert near the bottom right corner.

Go to File, left click Save As. Rename and choose a folder to save in.

Left click on Save in the bottom right corner.

This opens a small window called Save as TGA.

Uncheck RLE compression.

Left click save.

That should do it.

The wonderful texture is redko's.

Thanx for sorting things out spdr109!  8)
I will follow your instructions how to harmonize textures in GIMP and see what comes out of it.
But to be honest I'm not happy with the result as shown in the last image.
It looks like if Redko's edited .tga consist of just a few shades of brown, green and black instead of 256 colours.

It took some time but I finally got it. It is very difficult to find a lot
of documentation for GIMP. The previous screens were just practice.
I just used the first palette that I tried. This is the final version.
This blends perfectly on the Lybia NE(JV69) map.

It was an interesting exercise and I got to learn a little more about
Gimp but it is alot easier and quicker, for me anyway, to have two
textures opened side by side and to match the colors by eye using
the various color tools. The process of finding just the right palette
that you need is a PITA!
